In 2017, Mission Street Arts was established by family and friends of the late artist Mike Murphy. Mike was a long time academic, writer, tai chi enthusiast, stone carver, and block printer. He spent many years as a professor at the University of Texas, as well as teaching, studying and living in the Middle East. He visited Jemez Springs throughout his life to enjoy the hot springs, visit the Bodhi Mandala Zen Center and study stone carving with, now, late artist Rollie Gambois and other carving artists. He eventually made Jemez Springs his home in 2001.
Mission Street Arts lives on in Mike’s memory and is the only artist residency program of its kind in Jemez Springs.
